How do you go about sharpening them?

I personally like the Worksharp 3000; it's easy to work with and you don't have to worry about metal losing its temper. While the instructions don't tell you this, I have also used it to put a razor sharp edge on pocket knives as well.

Suggest you watch http://www.shopsmithacademy.com/SS_Archives/SS110/SS110_Strip_Sander_Sharpening.htm when you have some time. Also see:
    -- http://www.hocktools.com/Sharpen.htm
    -- http://www.lie-nielsen.com/pdf/Sharpening.pdf

The video was designed to showcase the Shopsmith Strip Sander, but there is some good basic information about sharpening in it. The articles I've cited also have basic info about sharpening plane irons and chisels which you should know in order to make an intelligent decision about buying stones, guides, or a "sharpening system." Of course, if you want one-stop shopping for sharpening information, everything you need to know is in the book "Sharpening" by Nick Engler.

    Hope this helps.

    With all good wishes,
    Nick

Yes Nick, I know I could read the book but I have never, ever been real good at doing that. I am more inclined to plunge right in and then have to ask a lot of foolish questions.

I was recently given (as a gift) a Work Sharp. I don't exactly know why but then I don't ask questions at a time like that. Anyhow, I have been busy sharpening chisels for the last few days and I now have a couple questions.

I think maybe I have never really sharpened a chisel all the way even though I thought I had. With the Work Sharp (and I am sure many others) the face of the chisels can be brought to a sheen that is like a mirror (with no grid marks at all). Does this level of polishing really do anything for the usefulness of the tool. The chisels are mighty sharp (scarey sharp) a couple grits before getting to the polished level.

I have to admit that now I have gotten tools that sharp I may become obsessed with keeping them that way.

Also, when I first started, I ground the face of three or four chisels at 25 degrees. I later started a second set of chisels and after grinding all the faces flat and clear of nicks, I discovered the bevel angle had been set at 30 degrees (by me). I probably did this to put a micro bevel on the other chisels.

Is there anything to be gained by regrinding them all to the same angle and if so - what angle.

They ALL cut better than any chisels I have used since I worked for an outfit that sharpened tools for the craftsmen. I wasn't one of them (craftsmen that is) but I cut in butt hinges, until I never wanted to cut in another. I was scab labor working for a contractor on a government job.

To answer your questions, Dusty, I spent today finishing up a few pages in the sharpening section that I have been working on. Here are the links:

    http://www.workshopcompanion.com/KnowHow/Tools/Sharpening/1_How_Tools_Cut_Wood/1_How_Tools_Cut_Wood.htm

    http://www.workshopcompanion.com/KnowHow/Tools/Sharpening/2_Sharpening_Knowhow/2_Sharpening_Knowhow.htm

These should help fill in the holes concerning you knowledge of sharpening grits, tool angles, and so on. Look them over, then get back to the Forum and let's discuss how this applies to tools like the Work Sharp. I have limited experience with the Work Sharp 3000 and none at all with the 2000, but I have used a home-built disc-sharpening system for years and the principles are the same.

    With all good wishes.
    Nick

Great sharpening section Nick. The thing that it reminded me of is that we don't need fancy equipment in all cases to sharpen. With all the info out there on sharpening machines, we forget that it has been done for a long time manually, as shown in many of your examples. Thanks for bringing it back to the basics.
