Has anyone ever heard of a MENARDS P.H.D? There is one listed on local craigslist. Did a google on it - found the following:

Kind of old . Just wondering if anyone here knows anything about one.

No the P.H.D. does not sand for piled higher and deeper.

The PHD was a resurrection of the Total Shop, a Shopsmith 500 clone. (See pic below top.) It's still around today, sold under the name of the Wood Master Multi-Tool. Both Total Shop and Super Shop (a more robust clone, pic below bottom, now called the Iron Wood)) have Chinese partners. In the 80s, when the Shopsmith patents expired, Smitty (Super Shop) and Total Shop wanted to get into the multi-tool market, but neither had enough capital to invest in the tooling. They took partners in the Orient who would provide the tooling and manufacturing for a share of the profits. To protect themselves, the Chinese asked that Smitty and Total Shop sell a minimum number of tools every year to remain the exclusive American distributors. As the power tool market collapsed in North America, first Total Shop and then Smitty saw their tools re-branded and sold by other outlets. You can get a Super Shop/Iron Wood through both Harbor Freight and Central Machinery. The Total Shop/Wood Master is harder to find, but there's still a machine tool company on Ebay who sells new units. I was at Shopsmith in the 80s when we tested the Total Shop and the Super Shop. If you're interested in buying one, my advice is to look for a used Shopsmith. It will be cheaper and it will last longer.

    With all good wishes,
    Nick

Brand new, the Wood Master is $695. Last year, I bought a used Shopsmith 500 in working condition for $150.

    With all good wishes
